Brand Search Is the New Brand Equity

Think about the last time you needed a dentist, a CA or a wedding photographer. You probably asked a friend. Then you Googled their name.
That second step is where brands are won or lost today.
Brand search is simple. It's when people type your business name into Google, YouTube or Maps. Not "best digital marketing agency." Just your name. That tiny action says something big: I already know you, and I want to check you out.
That's brand equity, measured in real time.
Brand equity used to feel vague. It was about reputation, recall and trust. Hard to measure, easy to ignore. Now you can see it. Open Google Search Console and look at how many people search for your brand every month. If that number is growing, your brand is growing. If it's flat, your marketing is just renting attention.
Why it matters more than ads. Someone who searches your name converts better, costs less and argues about price far less. They've already heard of you. They only need a reason to say yes.
So how do you grow it?
Show up where people already look. A complete Google Business Profile, fresh reviews and real photos do more than most ad campaigns.
Be memorable. A clear name, a clear promise and a face people recognise. If nobody remembers you, nobody searches for you.
Run ads that build awareness, not just clicks. Reels, YouTube videos and local content plant your name in people's heads. Search captures the interest later.
Protect your name too. Bid on your own brand keywords so competitors don't sit above you.
The simple test: if your ads stopped tomorrow, would people still search for you?
If the answer is no, you don't have brand equity yet. You have traffic you pay for.
