One Question I'm Excited to Ask

Every episode has one question I can't stop thinking about.

Not the opening one. Not the polite warm-up. I mean the question that sits in my notes, highlighted twice, waiting for the right moment.

For this episode, it's this:

"What's one decision you made that looked like a mistake to everyone else, but turned out to be the best move of your career?"

Simple, right? But here's why I love it.

Most guests come prepared. They know the usual questions. They've got their answers polished and ready. This one is different. It makes them pause. You can almost see them scrolling through old memories, picking the right story.

And that pause is where the good stuff lives.

Because a real answer isn't a lesson from a textbook. It's messy. It has doubt in it. Maybe a bit of fear, a few people who said "bad idea," and one stubborn choice anyway.

That's the story listeners actually remember.

I've learned something from doing this. The best podcast moments are never scripted. They happen when a guest stops performing and starts thinking out loud. A good question opens that door. It doesn't push. It just gives them room.

So when I prepare, I don't write fifty questions. I write ten, and I pick one that matters most. Then I shape the whole conversation around getting to it naturally.

I won't spoil the answer. Honestly, I don't know exactly what I'll hear, and that's the exciting part.

All I'll say is this: when it came, I stopped taking notes and just listened.
